Consent to Participate in Research (Submission ID:STUDY00001264, Date Approved:5/12/2021)
Basic Study Information Title of the Project: Circular Economies Principal Investigator: Lucy Atkinson, PhD, Associate Processor, University of Texas at Austin
Invitation to be Part of a Research Study You are invited to be part of a research study. This consent form will help you in choosing whether or not to participate in the study. Feel free to ask if anything is not clear in this consent document.
What is the study about and why are we doing it? The purpose of the study is to understand how Texans think about food – in terms of how it’s produced, distributed and disposed of. Our goal is to understand the connections that can help us minimize waste, and keep products and materials in use, and create healthier places.
What will happen if you take part in this study? If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a survey about your attitudes toward sustainability, the environment and food. You will also be asked to identify locations on a map where you engage with food-related activities. The study can be completed online and will take about 20 minutes.
How long will this study take and how many people will be in the study? Participation in this study will take 20 minutes and includes 250 participants.
What risks and discomforts might you experience from being in this study? Although it is unlikely that there will be any risk, stress, or discomfort involved in the survey, some people feel uncomfortable participating in survey or that being in a study is an invasion of privacy. If that happens, you may withdraw from the study without any risk to you.
How could you benefit from this study? You will receive no direct benefit from participating in this study; however, the benefits of participating in the survey include helping with scientific research on understanding how to develop more efficient, equitable food systems.
What data will we collect from you? As part of this study we will collect open- and closed-ended answers to questions about sustainability, environmental concern, and attitudes toward food production, consumption and disposal. We will also ask you to pinpoint locations on a map that are related to food activities. You will also have the opportunity to upload a food-related photo or image.
How will we protect your information? We will protect your information by restricting access to the data to the research team. Data will be stored on the PI’s password-protected computer and deleted after two years. There will be no identifying information in the dataset. Data from the survey will be used to develop recommendations for equitable food systems. However, you will not be identified and data will be used at the aggregate level. If you are one of the first 100 participants, your name and any other identifying information that is collected for the purposes of receiving the $25 participant incentive will be stored separately from the data collected as part of the project. This identifying information will be deleted once the participant incentives have been disbursed.
Information about you may be given to the following organizations: • Representatives of UT Austin and the UT Austin Institutional Review Board We will share your data with other researchers for future research studies that may be similar to this study or may be very different. The data shared with other researchers will not include information that can directly identify you. We plan to publish the results of this study. To protect your privacy, we will not include any information that could directly identify you.
What will happen to the information we collect about you after the study is over? We will keep your research data to use for future research. Your name and other information that can directly identify you will be deleted from the research data collected as part of the project.
How will we compensate you for being part of the study? If you are one of the first 100 participants, you will receive a $25 gift card for your participation in this study. If you withdraw from the study before completing it, you will not be eligible for the gift card. You will be responsible for any taxes assessed on the compensation.
Your Participation in this Study is Voluntary It is totally up to you to decide to be in this research study. Participating in this study is voluntary. Your decision to participate will not affect your relationship with The University of Texas at Austin. You will not lose any benefits or rights you already had if you decide not to participate. Even if you decide to be part of the study now, you may change your mind and stop at any time. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer. If you decide to withdraw before this study is completed, your data will be deleted from the dataset.
